The Hays shop above belonged to my grandparents (Francis Clifton Hay and Emily nee Rook). They also had a much larger furniture shop at 16 Edward Street, but that was subject to a compulsory purchase order in the mid thirties for area redevelopment. That redevelopment took place 50 years later and the American Express building stands there now. The family joke was that it was my grandmother who was the blur in front of the shop on the above picture, for she could never sit still for a minute.
