FAWCETT SCHOOL

THEN AND NOW

By JOHN WIGNALL

On a recent visit to Brighton I had the chance to visit the old Fawcett School building, now known as the Trafalgar Building of City College.

By and large the inside has changed very little with most of the classrooms still being in situ apart from the corridors being brought up to date, however there are some radiators that i remember in the fifties.

I was there 44-46 before going to the Building College in Hanover St. I remember the head telling us that Fawcett was the man who rowed Charles ll to France after he hid in the tree. I also remember Mr Hubbard RE and maths who used the strap if you forgot homework. Mr Cox Dep' Head was ok. Wasn't happy there.

JUST A NOTE ABOUT THE NAME OF FAWCETT SCHOOL,IT WAS NAMED AFTER Lt COL JOHN FAWCETT WHO WAS THE FIRST MAYOR OF BRIGHTON FROM 1854/5, CHARLES THE SECOND ESCAPED TO FRANCE IN 1651, Lt COL FAWCETT WAS NOT BORN UNTIL 1803 SOME 152 YEARS LATER SO SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY THE HEAD MUST HAVE GOT HIS WIRES CROSSED,FAWCETT SEC MOD WAS CREATED IN 1946 BY CLOSING THE INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL AND CREATING TWO SCHOOLS OUT OF ONE, THE OTHER SCHOOL WAS MARGARET HARDY SCHOOL FOR GIRLS. JUST OUT OF INTEREST I WOULD WELCOME COMENTS ON THIS AS FAWCETT AND MARGARET ARE NOW PART OF HISTORY
