Brighton in the 1850s

The Upholstery Business

By Reg Martin

My family lived in the Brighton area from the mid 1820s. In the 1841 Census my GG Granfather James Martin is listed as a Master Upholsterer with a business in East Street Brighton employing 13 men and 2 women. I have been able to progress my search to his death in 1886 when he was living in 7 Brunswick Square.

I am keen to follow up the Upholstery side of the story and would be grateful if anyone has information on how to progress this.

I have plans to visit Brighton at some stage to follow up the current info, that I have (names and addresses ) to take pictures etc.

Thanks to anyone with any information.

Regards

Reg Martin
