4 & 5. Kemptown

As Kemptown is such a large area, we had to divide it up into two displays for the exhibition, but we have reunited the area for the website.

Kemp Town (as two words) refers to Kemp's original estate; Kemptown (as one word) refers to the general area, which starts to the east of the Pavilion. The Pavilion itself was originally constructed around a farmhouse owned by Kemp's family.

Thomas Read Kemp was an MP and land owner who had a vision for a spectacular estate in the middle of Black Rock Down. Only two-thirds of the estate was built, because Kemp ran out of money and ended up fleeing the country.
